Essex Children’s Choir

Our education philosophy incorporates music education principles developed by Hungarian composer, Zoltan Kodály (1882-1967). Our program emphasizes the use of folk song, children's natural proclivity toward pentatonic singing, and solmization pedagogy. Our primary musical literature includes Kodály's 333 Reading Exercises and Bicinias, which are used to nurture skills of musical spatial awareness, sight-reading, intonation, and two-part singing.

Auditions are not held. We provide children the opportunity to learn through a sequential curriculum, building necessary foundations to achieve an empowering understanding and command of singing and musical language.

Our program reaches children from all over Vermont, including Burlington, Charlotte, Huntington, Jericho, Milton, St. Albans, Shelburne, South Burlington, Swanton, Underhill, and Williston.

“To teach a child an instrument without first giving him preparatory training and without developing singing, reading, and dictating to the highest level along with the playing is to build upon sand.”
